John LeckieFrom entering Abbey Road Studios on February 15th 1970 as a Tape-Operator, to Balance Engineer, then graduating to produce and help launch the careers of some of the most exciting and influential new rock bands of the past four decades. Producing significant landmark albums of recenttimes, such as THE STONE ROSES ('The Stone Roses'), RADIOHEAD ('The Bends'), MUSE ('Showbiz' & 'Origin Of Symmetry'), SIMPLE MINDS ('Life In A Day' & 'Reel To Reel Cacophony'), John Leckie continues to be one of the most dynamic, respected, prominent, sought after and well regarded producers in the recording business.

John started off working as atape-operator at Abbey Road with artists such as JOHN LENNON (“Plastic Ono Band”), GEORGE HARRISON, (“All Things Must Pass”), SYD BARRETT (“Barrett”) and firstengineering for PINK FLOYD, (“Meddle” and “Wish You Were Here”) WINGS ('Band On The Run'), PAUL MCCARTNEY (“Red Rose Speedway” “Hi HiHi & C’Moon”) MOTT THE HOOPLE (“Mott”), WIZZARD and ROY HARPER  amongst others. Also during his time at Abbey Road he produced and mixed albums for BE BOP DELUXE (“Axe Victim’, “Sunburst Finish”, “Modern Music”, “Live In The Air Age” &“Drastic Plastic”). John left Abbey Road in 1978 and produced albums for SIMPLE MINDS (“Life in A Day” “Real To Real Cacophony” and “Empires & Dance”) MAGAZINE (“Real Life”), XTC “3D-EP”, “White Music” & “Go 2”) PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED, (the debut single, “Public Image”) plus the infamous for XTC side project DUKES OF STRATOSPHEAR (“25 O’Clock” & “Psonic Psunspot”) and has since worked as a much in a demand freelance producer. He met up with Safta Jaffery when Safta first set up SJP/Dodgy Productions in 1985 where he has to date been exclusively represented.

the bendsAlbum productions with artists THE FALL, GENE LOVES JEZEBEL, ADULT NET, THE GRAPES OF WRATH, THE LUCY SHOW and ROBYN HITCHCOCK were among some of the projects undertaken by John during the eighties. In USA at this time he also produced THE POSIES, LETS ACTIVE, HOUSE OF FREAKS & THE PROOF. In 1989 John produced THE STONE ROSES debut album “The Stone Roses”. A music poll taken by BBC 6 voted Stone Roses' eponymous debut album produced by John Leckie, as the best record of all time. This was followed up in June 2004 with the Observer Music Monthly’s Special Issue of, “The 100 Greatest British Albums” voting it at No 1.

JL & Jimmy PageWith his Music Week award for “Best Producer” (1995), Q Award for “Best Producer” (1996), Brit Award for “Best Producer” (1997), (by a strange coincidence the award came almost 27 years to the day he first started at Abbey Road Studio’s), John also added to his trophy cabinet with the prestigious “Producer of the Year” award at the Music Managers Forum in 2001 which was presented to him by Jimmy Page for recognition for his services as one of the great record producers of his time.

Britpop dominated the nineties and John as before was in constant demand : THE STONE ROSES (“Second Coming”) LILAC TIME (“And Love For All”), RIDE, (“Carnival of Light” 1993 ), ELASTICA, (the debut album “Elastica” 1994), CAST, (“All Change” 1995 and then their second album in 1997, “Mother Nature Calls”), KULA SHAKER, (“K”1996), THE VERVE, (“A Storm in Heaven”, SPIRITUALISED (“Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space”), DR. JOHN (“Anutha Zone”) COWBOY JUNKIES (“Miles From Our Home”), RICHARD ASHCROFT’S solo work and Taste Media’s then new signings MUSE’S debut album ‘Showbiz’. John was also aproducer for REAL WORLD RECORDING WEEKS and during this time made records for PAPA WEMBA, SHIVKUMAR SHARMA, GOPAL SHANKAR and RIZWAN QUALLI.

JL 1997In 2000, John produced an album for Palm Pictures artist BAABA MAAL in rural Senegal, (“Missing You”) which was recorded, (mostly after dark), at Baaba Maal’s house near Dakkar. The place had no electricity so everything was powered from a Honda generator. Despite heat, location, nasty biting insects, locusts and cicada’s landing on the equipment and the sounds of the crickets in the background, (sometimes the sound was so intense the mics had to be turned off), the album earned rave reviews.

2001 also saw John produce MUSE’S second album, “Origin of Symmetry”– the album reached No. 3 in the album Chart and along with the 1st album was later certified platinum.

In 2002 John produced a single for SUEDE, (“Positivity” from the album “New Morning”), and produced Latin superstars and three time Grammy winners LOS LOBOS, (“Good Morning Atztlan” – their eleventh studio album), for Mammoth Records at CGR Studio’s in California.

In 2003 John oversaw the remastering of the STONE ROSES compilation on Silvertone and produced ONE MINUTE SILENCE album “One Lie Fits All” for Taste Media. At this time John also did a stereo mix of “A Whiter Shade of Pale” by PROCUL HARUM from the original four-track tape. This was for Classic Records.com and for vinyl release only. The track was mixed on an Edwardian houseboat called "Astoria” which belongs to David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. John also produced a solo LP for JOHN POWER (from The La's and Cast) for Eagle Rock.

2004 – John produced tracks for NEW ORDER, "Waiting For The Siren's Call" and highly acclaimed MY COMPUTER “No CV”.

2005 – John produced the highly critically lauded 2nd album for MY MORNING JACKET entitled “Z” for RCA, recorded at Allaire Studios in upstate New York. Later that year, John produced a self-titled debut album for the brilliant Mexican duo RODRIGO Y GABRIELA, for Irish label Rubyworks. This album, after initially going straight to number one in Ireland, is still gaining ground across the world and was No.1 in the American 'Heat Seekers' chart and also a regular No.1 in the Billboard World Music charts.

2006 – John produced the debut album by newcomers TINY DANCERS entitled 'Free School Milk' for Parlophone, the EP 'Fast, and the track 'Back To The Start' for RAZORLIGHT for Vertigo / Mercury.

2007 saw a long time coming union of two household names around Manchester, John Leckie and DOVES. John produced 3 tracks for the new album ('Kingdom Of Rust') between Rockfield and Mickie Most’s RAK Studios. John also traveled to LA to produce further tracks by RODRIGO Y GABRIELA (whose Leckie produced debut album has now sold over 600,000 records) and was reunited with BAABA MAAL (this time in the more comfortable and relatively cricket free setting of Beethoven Street Studios in London) to produce his forthcoming album due out in 2009.

john leckie today2008 John produced a debut album for Scottish newcomers SERGEANT and made regular trips to india, as part of a British Council initiative, to produce four local bands , MEDUSA, SWARATHMA, INDIGO CHILDREN and ADVAITA. The aim was to encourage a range of technical and creative approaches to music production, as would be typically experienced in the UK. John selected the four aspiring unsigned bands and recorded tracks at Yas Raj Studios in Mumbai. The artists were invited to play the 'Great Escape Festival' in Brighton in celebration of the project.

In 2009 John has produced tracks for the forthcoming second album by RODRIGO Y GABRIELA in Mexico and has remastered one of his classic production, which will see a reissue celebrating 20 years since the original release of the STONE ROSES debut. In addition to producing an album by the eclectic 'PORTICO QUARTET' for Real World Records.
